New voluntary electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) jurisdiction
On 12 March 2018 the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016 (MTPD Act) came into effect. The MTPD Act introduced a new framework for advance care planning for all kinds of medical treatment. For more information refer to the Department of Health’s website on the MTPD Act.
The MTPD Act amended the Mental Health Act 2014 (MHA), extending the Tribunal’s jurisdiction to hear applications for electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) for voluntary adults who do not have capacity to consent to treatment.
