New ECT report template launched

In the lead up to Mental Health Tribunal hearings, mental health services prepare a clinical report for each patient. These reports set out information that the Tribunal needs to know when conducting hearings. The reports are also provided to patients at least 48 hours before the hearing.

As part of the 2015-2017 Strategic Plan, the Tribunal is committed to maximising consumer participation in hearings and building excellence in mental health law. This year the Tribunal will develop resources that will assist designated mental health services, consumers and carers to better understand the law that applies to electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) applications to the Tribunal.

As a first step the Tribunal revised the template for the clinical reports concerning ECT (MHT 6 – Electroconvulsive treatment report Adult Patients). You can download the template here.

The revised template asks questions that reflect the issues that will be discussed at hearings. The revised template will contribute to better hearing preparation and more focused and streamlined hearings.

The Tribunal has asked mental health services to start using the new report template from 3 April 2017.

The instructions for completing the report have not changed and can also be accessed here.
